Karl Benjamin

(1925-2012) Karl Benjamin is known for his paintings of vibrant geometric abstractions. Born in Chicago, Benjamin relocated to the Los Angeles area. Benjamin had no formal education when he began painting and only became interested when exploring the relationships of colors when developing art lessons for his elementary school students. He later took classes and received an M.A. degree in 1960.

His first solo show was at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1954. He became well-known following a show at the Los Angeles County Museum in 1959-1960 known as Four Abstract Classicists and also featuring the work of Lorser Feitelson, John McLaughlin and Frederick Hammersley. A survey of his work was featured at the Claremont Museum of Art in 2007.
