(1860-1945) Artist, photographer, inventor, patron of the arts, and teacher, Frank Reaugh was called the “Dean of Texas Painters.” Formally trained at St. Louis School of Fine Arts and Academie Julian in Paris, Frank Reaugh devoted his career to the visual documentation in pastel and paint, portraying the vast, still unsettled regions of the Great Plains and the American Southwest. Settling in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Reaugh sought to display art publicly in the city when Carnegie Library was built in 1901 and convinced library officials to create an Art Room in the new public library. The painting shown was donated for a start to the collection. Reaugh was active in the Society of Western Artists and exhibited at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition.
