Should a Monument to Joe Paterno be Removed? Sculptor Weighs In

Paterno Statue from RockinRob Via Wikimedia CommonsWhile a plane being trailed by a banner circles the campus of Penn State University asking that a statue of legendary coach Joe Paterno be removed, the sculptor says not so fast. ESPN News reports that while University officials are set to make a decision next week, sculptor Angelo Di Maria suggests putting a cover on it and waiting six months or a year. The Pennsylvania resident was commissioned more than a decade ago by “Friends of Joe and Sue Paterno,” as well as Penn State to create the life-sized statue that currently stands outside of Beaver Stadium. The statue has become a symbol of a scandal that has rocked the university in recent months. Calls for its removal began when a report concluded that Paterno was aware of the 1998 child molestation allegations against former coach Jerry Sandusky. The sculptor’s suggestion may be a good one. We are reminded of a quote from Thomas Jefferson “When angry, count to ten before you speak. If very angry, count to one hundred.”
