A snowstorm in New York doesn’t seem to have kept bidders away from Christies Interiors sale. Today the sale moved from paintings to furniture and decorative arts. I wondered if many items would sell below estimates. While results are mixed, some items are performing well–especially the hurricane shades. Some furniture also proved to have significant appeal. A George III Bachelor’s chest estimated at $1000-$1500 brought $3500. An American classical sofa estimated at $800-$1200 brought $1500. A German porcelain figure of a ‘Player at Bowls’ estimated at $800-$1200 brought $2,375. The sale also saw another early 19th century piano forte hammer at astonishingly low prices. Estimated at $800-$1200, this piano went to a lucky bidder for just $650. The sale continues. 
Urban Art & Antiques 
It is always interesting to follow Christies Interiors Sales as they serve as a major draw for the new collector, as well as the interior design trade. I am impressed by the rapid adjustments this department makes in terms of types of material it offers in the sales in accordance with demand, and their marketing is right on for introducing the new buyer to the auction buying process. Their catalogs for the sales remind me a bit of home decor magazines. Very user friendly.
