Mac Whitney (1936–2025) was a Texas-based sculptor renowned for his monumental abstract works in raw steel. Born in Kansas, he moved to Ovilla, Texas, in 1969, where he maintained a private studio and continued to work independently throughout his life. Whitney’s sculptures are characterized by their dynamic forms and expressive use of tension and resolution, reflecting the fundamental forces of the built environment.
His public art includes significant installations such as “Houston,” a 50-foot-tall red steel sculpture commissioned by the City of Houston in 1981, and “Batson,” a piece from his Underslung Series acquired by the Houston Airport System. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with pieces held in collections including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Art Museum of South Texas.
Whitney’s legacy is celebrated for his dedication to craftsmanship and his ability to imbue industrial materials with poetic form. He passed away in 2025, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Texas art scene and beyond.
